July 4th Weekend 2009

Been pushing pretty hard for several months so relaxing with friends on Lake Shoecraft was just what I needed.

I still spoke on Sunday so I was up at 5am to make the drive and was pleasantly surprised by the crowds. I have made a similar drive countless times in order to celebrate a holiday and preach on the and weekend.

Reminds me of my favorite movie line: “Get busy living or get busy dying.” (Red, from Shawshank Redemption)

Can’t wait for next year!

Weekend Recap for 6.14.09

This was a great weekend!

  • First of all, I love what I get to do, encouraging people to follow Jesus Christ!
  • We had our GodKids for the weekend. I’ve said it before, but Aidan and Delia are amazing! And they’ve got great parents! Ryan & Molly, you guys are awesome!
  • We took them to Wild Waves yesterday! So fun to watch them love life!
  • Finished my teaching series on dealing with temptation today. This one hit home!
  • I’ve gotten a lot of feedback on this series. I pray hit helps all of us pause in the midst of temptation and realize that there’s always more at stake then what we think!
  • Aidan, watched our drummer all service! Then made a bee-line for the kit after service. We let him play for a few minutes. This kid has rhythm!
  • We announced two new Community (Small) Groups today: Motorcycles & Shotguns! I love my church!
  • I’m taking a riding class next month to get my endorsement. Now I need to get a motorcycle!
  • Jason Craft is doing a great job!

Weekend Services and Snow Storms

I spent almost 10 years pastoring a church that met in a High School. Every Sunday was the equivalent of moving a small house, unpacking all our equipment and then loading it back up. So when it snowed like it did this past weekend it made it really difficult to hold services. Most of the time we’d make it happen. Sometimes we’d go acoustic, not have coffee and not have children’s ministry. And other times, on the rare occasion, we’d cancel.

Now that I’m at a church with a building, it’s a whole different thing. Here’s a few thoughts:

  1. Those that lead a portable church…my heart, goes out to you. Every decision you make is more complex. Sure the bills are larger for me now, but just showing up and turning the heat on is a whole lot simpler than living out of a cargo trailer.
  2. People work just as hard in every church. For example, this last Sunday, after we had about a foot of snow over the night, a member showed up at 6:30 AM (without being asked) and started shoveling snow. Wow!!! That’s a guy who understands what our mission is! Thanks Charley!
  3. I’m responsible to Christ for my service. Whether the place is packed out or I find myself preaching to a few diehards with 4-wheel drive, I’m called. Period. I will love those that are there, not fret over those that aren’t!
  4. The coffee always tastes better when it’s freezing outside. What I mean is this: when these kinds of weekends come around, it does something special in a church family. I will always remember Ian, our worship leader, leading worship with his snowboarding boots. I’ll remember hearing Bob’s story because we turned the 8:30 AM service into a small group discussion. These are the kinds of experiences that we all look back on and say, “Remember when…?”

I could go on and on but the bottom line is this: There’s churches of every variety all full of hard working, dedicated and faithful people. If you don’t attend one, you might find this hard to believe but we do it all for you.

Weekend Recap

I've been sick for 4 days but had a great weekend nonetheless.

  • We spent Friday night hanging with family and keeping the pumpkin carving tradition alive (pic below).
  • Saturday I watch our sorry Cougs and Huskies lose. Not a good year for Washington sports.
  • We created space for 50 more seats in the auditorium and the place was packed. We are well over the 80% capacity rule. If you can try the 11:30 or 7pm service and free up some seats in the 10am for guests, that would be awesome.
  • I spoke on forgiveness today and closed the message with Romans 8:28, "God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God…" I asked this question: Is there anything that's not part of everything? It's important to realize that every offense and hurt will be leveraged for our good and His glory.
  • I've been sick and my throat was really soar. So I drank 3 bottles of water and forgot to pee before the 3rd service. MISTAKE!
  • Tom spoke for me tonight at The Wedge. Thanks bro, I appreciate it!
  • And that means I'm relaxing with my family watching the Seahawks lose.
